HC Deb 21 May 1957 vol 570 c70W
Mr. Strachey

asked the Minister of Defence what is the estimated total national expenditure for all purposes which could be fairly described as civil defence expenditure for the years 1955–56, 1956–57, and 1957–58.

Mr. Sandys:

Civil Defence expenditure by Civil Departments was about £42 million in 1955–56 and £25 million in 1956–57. The estimated expenditure in 1957–58 is £20 million. This does not include the expenditure by the Service Departments on measures to aid the civil authorities in the event of war.
