§ 72. Mr. Shinwellasked the Parliamentary Secretary to the Ministry of Education if he will give an estimate of the cost of providing payment of fees to young people entering universities without a means test.
§ Sir E. BoyleThe cost this year of paying tuition and other fees, excluding residence charges, for United Kingdom students at universities in England and Wales would 91W be about £3½ million. About £800,000 of this is already met by my Department under the arrangements for State Scholarships, and I estimate that something of the order of £2 million is met by local education authorities under their arrangements for university awards.
