asked the Secretary of State for the Home Department, in view of the substantial proportionate increase of abscondings relative to average population in approved schools in 1956 compared with 1952, if he will make inquiries to ascertain the cause of this.

The amount of absconding from individual schools is kept under close review by inspectors of86W the Children's Department, and inquiry is made, and any appropriate action taken, where the number of abscondings from a particular school is exceptionally high. My right hon. Friend has no reason to think that any more general inquiry is called for at present.
