Mr. Lucasasked the Minister of Transport and Civil Aviation whether the work on the West Cromwell Road Extension in Brentford and Chiswick is still keeping pace with the schedule laid down; whether the costs are within the original estimates; and whether he will make a statement.
§ Mr. WatkinsonThe Answer to the first part of the question is, "Yes." The cost is likely to exceed the 1953 estimate by about £1 million. This is due to the general rise in prices since then; to the need to provide a more elaborate treatment at the various road junctions to cater for the rapidly increasing growth of traffic; and to the fact that the carriageway widths have been increased from 27 ft. to 30 ft.
