HC Deb 13 February 1957 vol 564 c173W
13. Mr. Snow

asked the Minister of Transport and Civil Aviation to make a statement on the recent railway accident at Welwyn Garden City; and what progress has been made in fitting automatic train control equipment.

Mr. Watkinson

An inquiry has been held by the Chief Inspecting Officer of Railways. I am awaiting his report, but it is already clear that the express train had passed signals at danger.

I gave my final approval to the automatic train control system on 30th November, and the Commission are now going ahead with its plans to provide the equipment on all the main traffic routes as quickly as possible.
