HC Deb 04 February 1957 vol 564 c10W
85. Mr. Beswick

asked the Secretary of State for Foreign Affairs what instructions he has given to the United Kingdom delegate at the United Nations organisation with regard to the formation of a permanent directly-recruited United Nations Force to supplement and to eventually replace the present United Nations Emergency Force.

Mr. Ian Harvey

As my right hon. Friend the Minister of State pointed out on 19th December, Her Majesty's Government are now considering whether there are any practical proposals that can he put forward for the organisation of a permanent force to be at the disposal of the United Nations. The difficulties in the way of establishing such a force are formidable, and any proposals call for careful consideration and also for consultation with our friends. It would be wrong to hold out hopes of any very early statement, and no instructions have been given to the United Kingdom delegate at the United Nations in this connection.
