§ Mr. Lewisasked the Minister of Housing and Local Government whether his attention has been drawn to a number of cases of deaths and suicides resulting from the operation of eviction notices under the Rent Act, 1957; and whether he will take the necessary action, in view of this new indication of hardship and suffering being experienced by many families, to grant security of tenure after 1958.
§ Mr. H. BrookeI have sought to investigate the facts of each such case coming to my notice. In each one of which I have been able to obtain details, the tenant's security of tenure was, in fact, not affected by the Rent Act. I emphasise again that tenants should obtain reliable information about the effect of the Act on their property. Any tenant who is in doubt about his position can do that by applying to his local authority or to a citizens' advice bureau.
