HC Deb 13 December 1957 vol 579 c172W
Mr. Moss

asked the Minister of Labour whether he will estimate the numbers of school-leavers who will be seeking employment during each year in the period 1961 to 1965 inclusive; whether he is aware that there will be reduced numbers in the Armed Forces during this period; and what consideration he has given to the problems which will arise.

Mr. Carr

Estimates of the number of young people who will reach the statutory school-leaving age from 1961 to 1965 are as follows:

1961 857,000
1962 929,000
1963 822,000
1964 778,000
1965 744,000

It is anticipated that there will be reduced numbers in the Armed Forces during these years. There should in general be no serious difficulty about school leavers obtaining employment during this period though there may be problems in some areas and these are being studied. The National Joint Advisory Council will shortly be receiving the report of the sub-committee which has been considering the arrangements for the training of younger workers in industry having regard to the expected increase in the number of young people entering employment.
