HC Deb 12 December 1957 vol 579 c164W
106. Mr. Prentice

asked the Secretary of State for the Home Department if he will give an assurance that the Metropolitan Police will assist local authorities in cases where prosecutions are necessary under the Rent Act, 1957, such as when illegal premiums are demanded, particularly in cases where extensive inquiries are needed, which would be outside the scope of the officers of a local authority.

Mr. R. A. Butler

The enforcement of the Act cannot, generally speaking, be regarded as a matter for the police, but the Commissioner of Police of the Metropolis tells me that he would be prepared to consider assisting in exceptional cases where extensive inquiries have to be made or many statements have to be taken before the local authority can decide whether to take proceedings.
