- (a) The weight of all pig or pig products imported in the first nine months of 1957.
- (b) How much per lb. on the above would be represented by the current provision for pig subsidy.
- (c) What were the imports from each country by weight and value.
- (d) What exporting countries are permitted unlimited shipments and which are subject to quota, and to what amounts.

- (a) 320,900 tons.
952 - (b) The current provision for the pig subsidy is £36.6 million for the financial year 1957–58: this is equivalent to £27.45 million for nine months which would represent about 9d. a lb. on the above tonnage.
- (c) See Appendix attached.
- (d) Imports of fresh, chilled and frozen pork (including offals), bacon, certain dried, smoked and cooked pork products and canned ham are admitted without quantitative restrictions (but subject to animal health regulations) from all exporting countries except those in the dollar area and the Soviet bloc. Whole hams produced from pigs bred in the sterling area are also admitted without limitation from the sterling area.
In addition there are the following import quotas:—
Bacon
- Poland: 48,500 tons—January-December, 1957.
- Hungary: 2,000 tons—July, 1957-June, 1958.
Canned Ham
- Poland: £1,320,000—January-December, 1957.
- Hungary: £30,000—July, 1957-June, 1958.
- Czechoslovakia: £165,000—October, 1956-December, 1957.
There are also a number of import quotas for meat products from these countries under which certain pork products are admissible.
