§ 52 and 53. Lord Balnielasked the Secretary of State for the Colonies (1) on what grounds action is being taken in Uganda against the former members of the Equatoria Corps; and where the offences were committed in respect of which they arc being charged;
(2) whether the former members of the Equatoria Corps who are being rounded up in Uganda in co.operation with the Sudanese Security Force are to be tried in Uganda or in the Sudan.
Mr. Lennox·BoydAbout twenty people, some of whom may have been former members of the Sudan Defence Force, were detained for questioning by the Uganda authorities following an incident within the Protectorate on 26th March when five members of a party of Sudanese officials and chiefs returning from a meeting with Protectorate officials were killed in ambush north of Madi Opei. None of those detained was arrested and all have been relased. The search for those responsible for the ambush is continuing, and any persons arrested in Uganda will be dealt with in accordance with Protectorate Law.
Investigation into this incident has led to the arrest, pending possible extradition proceedings. of two former members of the Sudan Defence Force suspected of complicity in an armed attack in the Sudan last September in which there were fatal casualties.
