§ 69. Mr. Willeyasked the Minister of Transport and Civil Aviation whether he will make a further statement on the Tyne Tunnel.
§ Mr. WatkinsonI can only repeat my previous statement that no project for a crossing of the Tyne can be included in the earlier years of the road programme. In the meantime the possibilities of a bridge as an alternative to a tunnel are being studied.
§ Dame Irene Wardasked the Minister of Transport and Civil Aviation whether he is now able to decide in favour of a new bridge over, or a tunnel under, the Tyne; and if he will give an assurance that the priority has remained unaffected by the inquiries he has been making.
§ Mr. WatkinsonI am afraid it is not yet possible to decide between a tunnel and a bridge as investigations are still proceeding, but the priority remains unaffected.
