HC Deb 26 November 1956 vol 561 cc23-4W
Mr. Kershaw

asked the Minister of Housing and Local Government what are his recommendations as to widths of roads, pathways and road verges on housing estates; and whether he is satisfied that the varying conditions of traffic in large housing estates and in small villages are adequately taken into consideration.

Mr. Sandys

I am sending to my hon. Friend a copy of the Schedule of Suggested Minimum Street Widths for Carriageways and Footways which was issued by my Department in 1951 for the guidance of local planning authorities. The document shows only the minimum widths recommended, and emphasises that the width of carriageways and footways should be varied to suit local circumstances. As far as I am aware the varying conditions of traffic are adequately taken into consideration, but if my hon. Friend knows of any difficulties I shall be glad to consider them.
