HC Deb 21 November 1956 vol 560 c75W
23. Captain Pilkington

asked the Minister of Transport and Civil Aviation how many vehicles there were on the roads in 1938 and 1955; how many he estimates there will be in 1956; and to what extent this latest estimate shows an increase on previous estimates.

Mr. Watkinson

The numbers of motor vehicles with licences current at the end of August were 2,987,470 in 1938; 5,859,349 in 1955; and 6,344,579 in 1956. The rate of increase over the last two years is consistent with estimates given by my predecessor.
