HC Deb 12 March 1956 vol 550 cc12-3W
70. Mr. Benn

asked the Secretary of State for the Colonies the total sum of money in the African Farming Improvement Fund in Northern Rhodesia; and how the Fund is being spent.

Mr. Lennox-Boyd

The audited accounts at 31st May, 1955, showed that the total sum in the Fund was £278,837. The Fund is used for such beneficial arrangements as the building of dams, weirs and wells, soil conservation works in African areas, subsidising the cost of carts to Africans for transporting maize from rural buying depots to railway line depots, subsidising the cost of fertiliser, and paying bonuses and loans to improved farmers.
