§ 72. Mr. Awberyasked the Minister of Labour what steps are being taken to arrange for the transfer of labour by his Department with the least possible friction between the employers and employees in view of the possibility of a large changeover in the near future from the less essential industries to those of more importance to the economy of the country.
§ Mr. Iain MacleodI do not accept the view that a large scale movement of workers from industry to industry is to be expected in the near future. When employers are faced with a prospective redundancy, it is most desirable, as I have frequently said, that they should have early consultations with their workers' representatives and give my local offices as long warning as possible of the numbers likely to be discharged.
