HC Deb 23 July 1956 vol 557 cc1-2W
Mr. Short

asked the Minister of Pensions and National Insurance what was the number of retired pensioners in Newcastle-upon-Tyne receiving National Assistance at the latest convenient date and on the corresponding date in each of the years 1950, 1951, 1952, 1953, 1954, and 1955.

Mr. Boyd-Carpenter

The following information has been supplied by the National Assistance Board in respect of supplementation of retirement pensions by regular weekly National Assistance allowances by their offices in Newcastle-upon-Tyne and Wallsend in the years 1954. 1955 and 1956. Owing to changes in the Board's administrative boundaries in 1954 comparable figures cannot be given for earlier years. The figures relate to allowances in payment on the last Tuesday in June in each of the years in question.

Some of the allowances provided for the requirements of a household with more than one pensioner.

The areas covered by the Board's offices in Newcastle-upon-Tyne and Wallsend extend considerably beyond the boundaries of the County Borough of Newcastle-upon-Tyne.

Year Number of allowances in payment
1954 11,641
1955 10,790
1956 10,701
