HC Deb 21 February 1956 vol 549 c19W
82. Mr. Hector Hughes

asked the Secretary of State for Scotland to make a statement on the present incidence of poliomyelitis in Scotland according to counties, cities, and towns; on the steps now being taken there for its treatment, cure, and elimination; and on the present success or otherwise of those steps.

Mr. J. Stuart

In the four weeks to 11th February, the latest for which figures are available, there were nine provisional notifications in Scotland. Two of these were in the County of Lanark, four in Glasgow and one each in Aberdeen, Dundee and Inverness Burgh.

Research into prevention and treatment continues on the lines indicated in reply to the hon. and learned Member on 23rd November, 1954. In addition I hope as a prelude to offering vaccination on a larger scale as a preventive measure, local authorities have been invited to arrange for the vaccination of a limited number of children of the most susceptible ages in May and June of this year.

There is no simple way of measuring the success of what is being done. The course of the disease must continue to be closely watched.
