§ Mr. Patrick Maitlandasked the Secretary of State for Scotland whether he is aware that three children were burned to death in a prefabricated house at Forth, in the County of Lanark, on 2nd February, 1956; whether he is satisfied that local fire precautions are adequate; and if he will make a statement.
§ Mr. J. StuartI learned of the fatal fire at Forth on the 2nd February with deep regret, and I should like to express my sincere sympathy with the relatives of the children who lost their lives. Although the fire appears to have been discovered at 8.30 p.m. the brigade was not called until 8.39 p.m. When it reached the fire the building was already enveloped in flames and rescue work was impossible. I am assured that the fire arrangements in the area are in accordance with the standards of cover at present generally recommended.
