HC Deb 02 August 1956 vol 557 cc186-7W
Mr. Body

asked the Minister of Agriculture, Fisheries and Food what has been the value of the drainage work done by the Essex Agricultural Executive Committee for the years ended 31st March, 1952, 1953, 1954, 1955 and 1956.

Mr. Amory

The information is as follows:

Year ended Value
£
31st March, 1952 106,372
31st March, 1953 148,743
31st March, 1954 234,428
31st March, 1955 239,876
31st March, 1956 244,000
(provisional)

These figures include a small element of work on trenching for water supply schemes. The substantial increase in the total after 1953 is due to drainage improvements after the East Coast floods.

Mr. Body

asked the Minister of Agriculture, Fisheries and Food by how much the value of the drainage work to be done by the Essex Agricultural Executive Committee for the year ending 31st March, 1957, is likely to differ from previous years.

Mr. Amory

On present information it seems likely that the value of drainage work to be undertaken by the Essex Agricultural Executive Committee in the current financial year will be some 20 per cent. below the value of that done in each of the last two financial years.

Mr. Body

asked the Minister of Agriculture, Fisheries and Food what criteria he will adopt in deciding whether the Essex Agricultural Executive Committee should cease to undertake drainage work.

Mr. Amory

The Essex Agricultural Executive Committee's drainage contract service will continue in operation until I am satisfied after consultation with the Committee that alternative facilities exist to undertake all the necessary field drainage work efficiently and at a reasonable cost to the farmers. The position is kept under constant review.
