Dr. Broughton

asked the Minister of Health (1) the number of patients in mental hospitals in England and Wales at the latest convenient date;

(2) how many patients were admitted to, and how many were discharged from, mental hospitals in England and Wales during 12 months up to the latest convenient date;

(3) the percentages of voluntary temporary, and certified patients in mental hospitals in England and Wales.

Following are the figures for all mental hospitals in England and Wales, including those not vested in the Minister.

At 31st December, 1955, there were 150,804 patients, of whom 26.6 per cent. were voluntary, 0.3 per cent. were temporary and 73.1 per cent. were certified. During 1955, 83,289 patients were admitted and 70,845 were discharged.
