asked the Minister of Defence to make a statement showing the number of recruits for each of the Services since the introduction of the new rates of pay; and give the recruiting figures for each Service in the corresponding period of 1955.

Following is the Answer: Figures at present available are for the period 2nd–14th April. They are provisional and cover only recruits from civil life.

The figures, with those for the corresponding period last year, are:

The incidence of Easter invalidates any comparison between the two years.
