asked the Secretary of State for the Home Department the total number of beds in remand homes; how many of these are unoccupied; and what is the national average cost per bed per week.

The number of places available in local authority remand homes on 31st December, 1955, was 1,238. On average 51 per cent. of these places were in use during the last six months of 1955. The average weekly cost for each child accommodated in 1955–56 is estimated to have been £11 15s. 6d.
