HC Deb 24 November 1955 vol 546 cc149-50W
Mrs. White

asked the Under-Secretary of State for Commonwealth Relations upon what conditions agreement had been reached with the Union of South Africa on the establishment of radar or other defence works in the High Commission Territories.

Mr. Dodds-Parker

Her Majesty's Government have agreed to grant facilities to the Union Government to survey sites for the establishment of radar stations in the Bechuanaland Protectorate and Swaziland for possible use in defence in the event of war. The survey may be extended to Basutoland if suitable sites cannot be found outside its borders. No question has arisen of the establishment of any other defence works by the Union in the High Commission Territories.
