HC Deb 02 November 1955 vol 545 cc119-20W
Mr. Awbery

asked the Secretary of State for the Colonies how many of the 218 strikes which have taken place in Singapore have been for increases of wages; and if he will now set up, in conjunction with the trade unions, such conciliation machinery as exists in this country.

Mr. Lennox-Boyd

A wage demand was an important issue in 81 of 235 stoppages of work during the first nine months of this year. Conciliation machinery already exists, and officers of the Singapore Ministry of Labour have been very active in promoting settlements. I understand that the Singapore Government are already considering what improvements can be made.
