HC Deb 02 March 1955 vol 537 cc266-7W
33. Mr. Tilney

asked the Secretary of State for the Colonies what programme of works, with approximate dates of completion, has been decided upon for general wharf and berth accommodation at Port Harcourt.

Mr. Hopkinson

A new lighter berth, tenders for which have to be submitted by 2nd March, 1955, should be completed by about mid-1956. Meanwhile, a temporary lighter berth has been completed. The contract drawings for the three new deep water berths are expected to be issued for pricing next summer. The main wharf will be extended by 1,500 feet to provide the deep water berths and three large transit sheds and a warehouse of 20,000 tons capacity. Work should begin on the wharf extension before the end of 1955 and the whole programme should be completed by about the end of 1958.
