§ Sir D. EcclesThe latest available figures show that in 1953–54 expenditure on the salaries of teachers in maintained schools and colleges was roughly £153 million. About 60 per cent. of this was met by the Exchequer.

§ Sir D. EcclesOf all the estimates I have seen relating to teachers the increase needed at the peak of the school population is round 50,000, but the assumptions on which such a calculation has to be made are too uncertain to make the figure of much value. With buildings the calculation is even more unreal.
