Captain Kerbyasked the Minister of Transport and Civil Aviation when the Old Shoreham toll bridge was last tested for safety and what was the report on its condition; the sum collected during 1954 by British Railways through its toll imposition upon this bridge; and whether 209W he will make a statement upon the progress of his discussions with the British Transport Commission with regard to the lifting of the present toll.
§ Mr. Boyd-CarpenterI am informed by the British Transport Commission that the bridge was last inspected on 10th December, 1954, and was found to be in a fair condition. The gross income from tolls in 1954 was £11,625. The British Transport Commission is not prepared to waive the toll without compensation, and I have no funds available at present for its purchase.
