HC Deb 21 December 1955 vol 547 cc313-4W
Sir J. Lucas

asked the First Lord of the Admiralty why the decision has been taken that local purveyors of foodstuffs shall not, in future, supply Royal Naval barracks.

Mr. Digby

Supply Officers are required to obtain most foodstuffs from naval victualling yards, Admiralty contractors and the Navy, Army and Air Force Institutes. The supply by local traders of certain items such as fresh produce is not excluded however provided that prices are reasonable and both the quality and variety of the goods are of the required standard.

At Portsmouth Barracks it has recently been found to be more advantageous generally to purchase from the Navy, Army and Air Force Institutes, but Supply Officers will continue to consider tenders from private traders.
