HC Deb 12 December 1955 vol 547 c141W
116. Major Legge-Bourke

asked the President of the Board of Trade if he is aware that his decision to import North American dessert apples has had a depressing effect upon the wholesale price of home-produced apples; and if he will so regulate future imports as to avoid a recurrence of this effect.

Mr. Low

No. I am informed by my right hon. Friend the Minister of Agriculture, Fisheries and Food that, with the sole exception of one variety in one recent week, weekly average prices of first-quality dessert apples realised by wholesalers in eight representative markets, taken together, in England and Wales have been consistently higher this season than in the corresponding weeks of last year.
