HC Deb 26 April 1955 vol 540 c46W
39. Mr. Albu

asked the Minister of Labour the numbers unemployed and on short time in the furniture industry in the country as a whole, and signing on at the Tottenham Employment Exchange, respectively.

Mr. Watkinson:

At 14th March, the latest date for which complete figures are available, there were 1,790 persons, whose last employment was in the furniture and upholstery industry, registered as wholly unemployed and 3,089 registered as temporarily stopped at employment exchanges in Great Britain. The corresponding figures for the Tottenham Employment Exchange were 84 and 71, respectively. At 18th April, the latest date for which we have a local figure, they were 73 and 287. I understand that there has been an increase in short time working since then.
