§ 81. Mr. Awberyasked the Minister of Pensions and National Insurance what would be the annual cost to the Exchequer to increase the blind persons' pensions by 10s. a week; and if he will take steps to assist financially those people who are sightless who have dependants and who are unable to compete in the labour market.
§ Mr. PeakeThe National Assistance Board already provides assistance for blind people who are unable to compete in the labour market at rates which are about 18s. a week above the normal rate. To increase the non-contributory pension paid to blind people at 40 would cost about £100,000 net but it would only benefit a small minority of blind persons whose means are such that they are not eligible for assistance.
