§ Mr. G. Thomasasked the Minister of Education the value in September, 1954, of a State scholarship of £150 in terms of purchasing power of 1951.
§ Sir D. EcclesThe value of a State scholarship cannot be accurately assessed in terms of the purchasing power of a particular sum of money. Increases in university fees are automatically met when they occur, and standard figures of maintenance are reviewed every three years on the basis of the actual expenses incurred by students at different Universities. The standard figures of maintenance were last reviewed in 1952, and my Department is about to make a further review with the object of fixing new rates for the period beginning October, 1955.
