HC Deb 09 November 1954 vol 532 cc120-1W
81. Sir D. Robertson

asked the Secretary of State for Scotland by what authority education authorities offer girls of school-leaving age bursaries for courses in domestic service at Bridge of Allan without prior application by the girls or any evidence that they desire to become domestic servants.

Mr. J. Stuart

Section 43 of the Education (Scotland) Act, 1946, empowers education authorities to grant bursaries to persons over school age to enable them to take advantage, without financial hardship to themselves or their parents, of any education facilities available to them. I consider that it is only right that education authorities should draw the attention of pupils leaving school to any further educational facilities from which they might be capable of benefiting and to this provision for financial assistance.
