asked the Secretary of State for Scotland the total numbers of schoolchildren who have been engaged in potato harvesting in each year since the war.

Since the Education (Exemption) (Scotland) Act, 1947, became law, the numbers of children employed in the potato harvest have been:

1947 40,000 (approximately)
1948 63,300
1949 61,800
1950 52,300
1951 50,000
1952 43,300
1953 42,100

The number for 1954 is not yet know.
