HC Deb 05 July 1954 vol 529 cc139-40W
59. Mr. Ede

asked the Secretary of State for the Home Department how many citizens of the United States of America have had permission to reside in this country withdrawn in each of the years 1945 to 1954, inclusive.

Sir D. Maxwell Fyfe

No figures are kept of refusals to grant extensions to aliens, of which there are large numbers every year. I cannot therefore give the information requested, but it is known that it has been necessary in a considerable number of cases in each of the years since 1945 to refuse extensions to individual United States nationals who are, like other foreigners, subject to the Aliens Order, and must qualify under general aliens policy if they are to be allowed to prolong their stay.
