HC Deb 26 January 1954 vol 522 cc225-6W
93. Mr. Janner

asked the Minister of Health whether, in view of the shortage of sanitary inspectors, he will take action to increase their numbers, especially having regard to the new food and drugs legislation which will shortly come into force.

Mr. Iain Macleod

I am informed that this prospective legislation is unlikely to add appreciably to the existing duties of sanitary inspectors. A working party on the recruitment, training and qualifications of sanitary inspectors has now reported and its recommendations, which deal, inter alia, with difficulties of recruitment are under consideration.

94. Mr. Blenkinsop

asked the Minister of Health the number of persons receiving training for the post of sanitary inspector as at the latest available date; and what action he proposes to take to encourage the recruitment of additional staff for this work.

Mr. Iain Macleod

While the precise number of student sanitary inspectors is not available, I am aware that recruitment presents difficulties. The report of the working party on the recruitment, training and qualification of sanitary inspectors which is concerned, inter alia, with this problem is under consideration.
