§ Mr. Shinwellasked the Secretary of State for Foreign Affairs what treaty exists between the United States Government and Her Majesty's Government for military action by the United States in the event of nuclear aggression against the United Kingdom in the European zone.
§ Mr. R. A. ButlerHer Majesty's Government and the United States Government are Parties to the North Atlantic Treaty, which provides that an armed attack against one or more of the Parties in Europe or North America shall be considered an attack against them all and that, if such an attack occurs, each of them will assist the Party attacked by taking such action as it deems necessary, including the use of armed force, to restore and maintain the security of the North Atlantic area.
