HC Deb 20 December 1954 vol 535 c205W
12. Mr. Short

asked the Minister of Pensions and National Insurance how many persons in the county borough of Newcastle-upon-Tyne were in receipt of National Assistance on 1st November, 1951, 1952, 1953 and 1954.

Mr. Peake

At the dates nearest to 1st November for which information is available, the following numbers of regular weekly assistance grants were being paid in the area served by the offices of the National Assistance Board in Newcastle-upon-Tyne.

Number of grants
30th October, 1951 16,521
28th October, 1952 18,142
27th October, 1953 18,532
26th October, 1954 18,700

Notes:

The area served by the Newcastle offices extends beyond the county borough and has a population about 23 per cent. greater than that of the county borough.

2. The last figure is partly estimated. It includes an estimated number of Newcastle cases dealt with since 3rd May by a new office at Wallsend.
