§ Mr. Russellasked the Secretary of State for the Colonies to what extent the wages of employees on tea plantations in East Africa have increased in recent years.
§ Mr. Lennox-Boyd,pursuant to his reply [OFFICIAL REPORT, 15th December, 1954; Vol. 535, c. 1773–1774], supplied the following further information:
The monthly value of free food provided for unskilled labour on tea estates is calculated at 23s. in Kenya and Tanganyika and 15s. in Uganda. This represents increases for Kenya and Tanganyika of 130 per cent. and 53 per cent. respectively over 1947 figures and for Uganda of 50 per cent. over 1949 figures. In addition to free housing, which is provided in all three Territories, the Kenya tea industry supplies welfare facilities, clinics and schools.
