HC Deb 15 December 1954 vol 535 cc143-4W
34 and 35. Mr. Manuel

asked the Secretary of State for the Colonies (1) on what grounds Chief Mpamba of the Lundasi District of Northern Rhodesia has been deposed from his chieftainship; and

(2) how many chiefs in Northern Rhodesia have been deposed since the establishment of the Federation of Central Africa; and what have been the reasons for their deposition.

Mr. Lennox-Boyd

Recognition has been withdrawn from Chief Mpamba, after a formal administrative inquiry, at the strong request of senior chiefs, and in accordance with the wishes of the people, because he opposed the wishes and flouted the formal orders of senior chiefs and members of his Native Authority. Chief Mpamba is the only Chief in Northern Rhodesia from whom recognition has been withdrawn since Federation.
