HL Deb 28 April 1954 vol 187 c200WA
THE DUKE OF SUTHERLAND

asked Her Majesty's Government whether, in view of the fact that the 93rd Highlanders were originally raised in the county of Sutherland, the centenary celebrations to take place this year should not be held in Sutherland; whether as the regiment was raised by the Countess of Sutherland it would seem fitting that the celebrations of the "Thin Red Line" of Balaclava fame should be held in the county in which it was raised; more especially as since the days of the Crimea the Colours of the 93rd have always been held in trust by the Dukes of Sutherland and have lain in the Great Hall at Dunrobin Castle; and as there is also at Strathnaver, Sutherland, a memorial monument sited on the spot where the original 93rd were raised.

EARL FORTESCUE

Individual regiments decide how and where to celebrate their own particular anniversaries. This regiment is serving overseas, but my right honourable friend the Secretary of State for War is bringing the considerations which have been raised by the noble Duke to the notice of the regimental authorities in connection with any ceremony which may be planned to be held in Scotland.
