HC Deb 26 November 1953 vol 521 cc82-3W
Mr. J. Morrison

asked the Minister of State, Board of Trade, as representing the Minister of Materials, what effect he anticipated the recent decision to decontrol imported timber would have on the demand for home-grown hardwood and softwood; and whether he will make a statement.

Mr. Amory

The removal of controls over the use of imported and home-grown softwood should increase the market for softwood of all types, as was indicated to the House on 13th July by my noble Friend's predecessor.

My noble Friend is not able to estimate the effect on the demand for home-grown hardwood of this measure of decontrol or of the freedom now granted to import hardwood from non-dollar sources.

Mr. J. Morrison

asked the Minister of State, Board of Trade, as representing the Minister of Materials, what consultation he held with representatives of saw millers of home-grown timber and of woodland owners before he took the decision to remove all controls from softwood and allow unlimited imports.

Mr. Amory

A representative of the Scottish Home Timber Merchants' Association took part in certain discussions with my noble Friend on 21st October. With that exception no representatives of the home timber trade or the landowners approached or were approached by him after his predecessor made it clear in this House on 20th July last that the Government were urgently considering the removal of controls from softwood.
