HC Deb 18 November 1953 vol 520 c163W
66. Mr. Sorensen

asked the Secretary of State for Foreign Affairs the present position of the United Nations Disarmament Commission; how many times the Commission has met this year; and what further action Her Majesty's Government will take to secure renewed consideration of this question by the United Nations.

Mr. Nutting

The Disarmament Commission has met once this year, on 20th August, when it approved its Third Report to the Security Council and General Assembly. Its previous report contained many constructive proposals which had been made by the Western Powers, but which the Soviet Government was not prepared to discuss.

Her Majesty's Government are anxious that, next year, progress may be made in the Commission's discussions and hope that the Soviet Government may then be ready to co-operate to this end.
