HC Deb 13 November 1953 vol 520 cc99-100W
Mr. G. Longden

asked the Secretary of State for the Colonies what have been the proceeds from the export of bauxite from British Guiana in each of the last five years; and what proportion of these proceeds has been reinvested in the Colony.

Mr. Lyttelton

The gross value of bauxite exported from British Guiana was:

£
1948 1,982,256
1949 2,501,949
1950 2,881,759
1951 3,420,310
1952 4,633,452

Detailed figures of the use made of these proceeds by the companies concerned after payment of taxation are not available, but in the three years 1950–52 the major producer alone, after paying some £2 million in taxation to the British Guiana Government, has reinvested more than another £2 million in the Colony. These figures do not include normal items of recurrent expenditure in the Colony such as wages.
