HC Deb 10 November 1953 vol 520 cc28-9W
Mr. Hamilton

asked the Chancellor of the Exchequer how many adult persons, including retirement pensioners, are in receipt of less than £4 per week on the latest date for which figures are available.

Mr. R. A. Butler

It is estimated that about 7¼ million persons were in receipt of incomes of less than £4 a week in 1952. This figure is based on the estimate of 9.09 million incomes of less than £250 per annum given in Table 16 of "National Income and Expenditure, 1946–1952," and includes juveniles as well as adults. Separate figures for adults are not available.

Mr. Hamilton

asked the Chancellor of the Exchequer how many wage earners are now receiving less than £4, £6, £8 and £10 per week, respectively, at the lastest date for which figures are available.

Mr. R. A. Butler

I regret that this information is not available.
