HC Deb 09 November 1953 vol 520 cc13-4W
Mr. Dodds

asked the Minister of Health if he is aware that confusion is being created by some dentists refusing to give dental treatment unless an identity card is produced; and if he will make a statement clarifying the situation for the benefit of dentists and the public.

Mr. Iain Macleod

Identity cards have been abolished but, for convenience, the same numbers as were on the cards are now used for National Health Service purposes. Dentists are asked to secure a patient's National Health Service number for reference in their claims for payment of fees. People should make sure that their numbers are entered on their medical cards, but if not and the number has been forgotten, the executive councils will always be prepared to help.
