HC Deb 05 November 1953 vol 520 cc1-2W
Mr. Braine

asked the Secretary of State for the Colonies when it is proposed to lay before Parliament the draft Order in Council suspending the present Constitution in British Guiana and providing for an interim constitution for that territory.

Mr. Lyttelton

The draft Order in Council is being laid today. It provides for the suspension of the existing Constitution in British Guiana with the exception of certain provisions concerning the public service of the territory, and the introduction of an interim constitution under which there will be an Executive Council and a Legislative Council with ex-officio and nominated members. The Governor will have discretion to charge any member of the Executive Council with departmental responsibilities. Initially only one or two nominated members will be given such responsibilities.
