asked the Minister of National Insurance the numbers of employed married women who in each year 1949–52 paid National Insurance contributions; and the numbers who opted not to pay contributions.

Throughout the period there were about 2¾ million married women working for employers and the proportion paying contributions decreased from about 55 per cent. to about 45 per cent.
