HC Deb 18 March 1953 vol 513 c6W
54. Mr. Mott-Radclyffe

asked the Secretary of State for Foreign Affairs whether he will make a statement on the decision of the Venice Tribunal regarding the action brought by the Anglo-Iranian Oil Company in respect of the Persian oil carried by the tanker "Miriella."

Mr. Eden

The action in Venice was one of protective proceedings for the judicial sequestration of the oil in question, pending the outcome of a main action in Rome to determine the ownership of the oil. The court decided that there was noprima facie reason why the sequestration should be granted. It was not asked to decide on the ownership of the oil. This more important question will be determined in the Rome court at the suit of the Anglo-Iranian Oil Company.

The Anglo-Iranian Oil Company has emphasised that its determination to take in all countries any such action as it deems necessary for the protection of its interests remains unchanged.
